Sour Cream Pound Cake

Im back. Summer morphed into fall, Christmas, and: " oh my gosh, how can it be January already!!"

Here's the recipe I promised my Facebook folks I'd post for Sour Cream Pound Cake with Buttered Rum Glaze.

2 sticks of butter (1/2 lb)
2 cups sugar
1 cup sour cream
1/2 tsp baking soda
3 cups flour
6 large eggs
1 tsp vanilla
Preheat oven to 325 degrees.
Cream butter & sugar together.
Add sour cream & mix till incorporated. Sift baking soda and flour together.
Add to cream mixture alternating with eggs, beating each egg one a time.
Add vanilla & pour into a greased and floured 10 inch tube pan. Bake for 1 hour & 20 minutes.
Buttered Rum Glaze
1 cup brown sugar
2 Tablespoons water
1/4 cup dark rum
2 Tablespoons of butter

While cake bakes prepare glaze.
Combine brown sugar, run and water in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil stirring until sugar dissolves.
Add butter, stirring until butter melts.

Pierce baked cake with a skewer all the way to the bottom.
Drizzle half the warm glaze evenly over the warm cake allowing it to absorb.
Drizzle remaining glaze over the cake and allow to cool completely.

A Tall Tale

Once upon a time, in the shadow of the Shawangunks, there dwelled some honeybees with an unusual sense of humor. Honeybees are generally orderly & methodical in all they do.
Late one night, these pollinating pranksters decided to go from the pumpkin blossoms to the blue hubbard squash blossoms just to see what would happen.
BLUMPKIN appears to be the result. We wont know for sure until this blue beauty has outlived his usefullness as a fall decoration, EXACTLY what he is: but Im sure he'll taste great!

see here! If you've purchased a basket that had gotten dirty or the shape has gone 'wonky',
here's the fix!
Immerse the basket for 15-20 seconds in plain water.
(Try not to wet the leather as you rehydrate the grass fibers.)
Turn it on its side on your counter or picnic table and roll it.
Flatten the bottom and let air dry!

Walk Way Over the Hudson

What a treasure we have right here in the Hudson Valley!

The longest pedestrian walkway in the world soars 280 feet above the Hudson River and is a brilliant example of re-purposing an existing structure. A 100 plus year old railroad bridge , damaged by fire in 1974, has been made into a 'linear park' for walking, roller blading, and bike riding. The views are phenomenal!!
My daughter asked me if I thought this is what the birds see when they fly?
I think shes got it EXACTLY right!

Herb Spiral

Now dosent this look like more fun than housework?

This herb spiral is about 6 and a half feet around, yet provides 20 feet of growing space. The lower part of the spiral rows are filled with half cooked compost, some fluffy straw & topped of with well rotted horse & goat manure. Once it settles, herbs get planted about every 12 inches.

Its essentially a glorified compost pile-flower pot herb garden . Once this is planted, we'll mulch around the edges to keep the lawn from trying to invade.

A little water music...

When my children were small, we spent alot of time wandering the woods & streams. Always drawn to water, my daughter described the sound of the brook as it made its way over the rocks, as " Water Music"
As each of my three children came along , they all heard and appreciated the Water Music.
Calming, constant yet ever changing we would walk along or sit beside and appreciate this concert provided for us by Mother Nature.
When they grew older, they took themselves to the woods. Needing time to think or be alone, they'd come back calmer for having listened .
I headed up the mountain alone yesterday looking for quiet & the need to reconnect with myself.
It's still there. It never left. Giving its beautiful calming concert to anyone who happens by.

Instant Spring

On the heels of a very heavy snowfall a few weeks ago, came 5 days of 60-70 degree lovelies that produced a much needed "Instant Spring". Here in the valley, Daffodils & Crocus are everywhere heralding the changing of the seasons. It may snow again before winter releases us, but this week was a much needed tonic for this winter weary soul.

The Mouse Who Came to Tea

We had a lovely gathering for " Meet the Mystics" at The Soap Barn last Saturday. We all enjoyed cheese & crackers, biscotti, tea & wine. It was warm & cozy by the fire and conversation was lively.

Mr Bill, our Wizard in residence quietly asked me if I had a container to catch the mouse.

WHAT??

Sitting daintily next to the cookie plate was a field mouse nicely eating a chocolate chip biscotti as tho she was an invited guest! Rather than being horrified, my guests commented on her confidence and manners! ( After all, she only ate HER cookie & we WERE in a barn)

She was quickly captured and taken outside . Our gentle wizard made sure she was away from the barn and sheltered from the rain while she finished her treat. A lovely time was had by ALL!

We have recently been informed by the lawyers for S.C.Johnson & Son, Inc. that they own the name "bugzoff" and "bugoff", and all variations thereof: and have respectfully asked us to cease using it. We have complied and NOW have to come up with a new name for our product.

Here is the Challenge!! Suggest an alternative name for our insect repellent products. If your suggestion is used then we will give you a $25 gift certificate to be used on our website or in our shop! (If more than one of you VERY creative folks suggests the same name, then we will give the credit to the first person who suggests it).

I have been trying for months to come up with a name that suggests swarms of insects fleeing in mortal terror, and have come up with...nada. So put on your thinking caps and please submit your suggestion by April 15th.

It Smells Like Spring

What a bright clear day we had. With temperatures in the low 50's you can see the snow mountains getting smaller by the day! While we have a glorious crop of mud, the air smells like SPRING!

I took a walk about the yard and gardens today. If you concentrate very hard & squint, this is what you see! However, when your vision clears and you look down, the center photo tells the true tale. But I know Spring is on the way, cause I CAN SMELL IT!!!

A little snow...

For all that the Southern States & sections of NY ( NYC. & LI) have had lots of snow this season, we havent had much up here in "our neck of the woods"
The back to back storms last week & into the weekend gave us all a "wake up call" about the power & fury of Mother Nature!
All the things that worry us became unimportant as we shifted into : Stay Warm, Stay Dry, and whats on the pantry shelves that we can eat? ( And how do we move 2 feet of snow)
We melted snow in canning pots to have enough water for the animals to drink.
No one complained about what was served for meals.
Everyone worked together to shovel out livestock, cars, and narrow paths to take us where we had to go.
Layers became our new fashion statement.
We huddled together in a nest of quilts and told stories till it was time to go to bed.
Neighbors helped neighbors with shovels, snowblowers, front end loaders and whatever they had.
And without the distractions of TV, internet, phone, and the endless list of "have to do's", we all worked together to stay safe. I was almost sorry when the power came back on.
I hope everyone stayed safe & warm!

A New Hampshire Mystery

In the hills surrounding Littleton, New Hampshire, this piece of local history sat in a sad state of disrepair on the verge of foreclosure for back taxes.

As I set about the LONG process of saving this beauty I became intrigued with its history. During countless trips North I began researched the deeds to this property. Imagine my surprise to discover the "1820" over the front door was the date of the "modernization" of this old beauty & that the original structure dated back to (approx ) 1789!

Armed with names from old deeds, the 1905 texts : The History of Littleton, Old Gazetteers & maps, I essentially did the 'genealogy" of the house. There were many local stories about the house and I was anxious to uncover the facts. After extensive research, talks with local historians, treks through ancient cemeteries I finally had what I believed to be an accurate history of the house.

"James Williams, a brother-in-law of Ebinezer Pingree, became a citizen of Littleton in 1789. He bought the Pingree property at North Littleton and established a tavern, over which he presided until his death in 1822. Mr Williams was a man of great enterprise, and soon had several acres under cultivation and before the close of the year a large & commodious log house built in which many a weary traveler in after years found rest & refreshment."

One of the large upstairs rooms had primitive murals painted over plaster & lathe that had never been painted or papered over and were unsigned. Another mystery!
While researching folk art & mural painting in the 1800's I stumbled across Rufus Porter.

"Rufus Porter, an artist and inventor who lived from 1792 - 1884 and spent his boyhood years in the Bridgton, Maine area, helped to create an American culture. In his early years Porter painted small watercolor portraits from Maine to Virginia, then later moved on to landscape painting on walls of private homes throughout New England. His use of local landscapes with a vivid palette and broad, open brushstrokes was a departure from the styles and content of classical European wallpaper. Because most of his murals were unsigned, it was not until the mid 1930s that his body of work was authenticated through the publications of Jean Lipman. Today he is recognized as an icon of American art, inventor, and founder of the Scientific American magazine." http://rufusportermuseum.org/

Similar, but not quite right.

After contacting the Smithsonian, Colonial Williams burg, The Museum of American Folk Art, and a painter familiar with the works & style of Rufus Porter, I still had no answers.

Fast forward 13 years: I receive an email with a picture attached inquiring: Is this your house? Ive been looking for you!

Bayberry Candle Making Day

Steeped in American history, bayberry candles have been given as gifts of prosperity and friendship for centuries. While the main significance of the bayberry candle is its historical tie to good wishes for the new year, bayberry candles have religious and cultural significance as well.

Colonial women discovered that boiling the berries of the bayberry bush resulted in a sweet smelling wax with a clean burn. Legend has it that the group of women who discovered bayberry wax started the colonial tradition of giving bayberry candles as Christmas Gifts.

According to colonial folklore, sweethearts who are separated at Christmas should light bayberry candles to be united by the candle's gentle aroma. In addition, burning a gifted bayberry candle down to the end on Christmas Eve will bring luck and good fortune for the following year.

"A bayberry candle burned to the socket, brings joy to the heart and gold to the pocket.'"

Many Christians believe that the light of the bayberry candle on Christmas Eve will welcome the Christ child into their homes. Legend states that the Bay Tree sheltered the holy family during a storm and as a result lightning will never strike it. Neo-pagans burn the bayberry candle for prosperity and happiness on Yule or the Winter Solstice.

For the settlers, bayberry candles signified the special pleasures of Christmastime and they still do today. One pound of bayberry wax requires 15 pounds of bayberries. In addition, the process of extracting the wax is time consuming and difficult. Bayberry wax is made by boiling the berries then repeatedly skimming the wax from the top. Because of this tedious process, bayberry candles were only burned on special occasions during colonial times. They were valued for their delicate scent, but also for their rarity.

My whole house is filled with the traditional scent of the holidays as I pour these candles.

Anise Biscotti

Anytime I make these delicious Italian Cookies, my son turns the house upside down looking for where Ive hidden them. These are also a handsdown favorite of the Arty Tea Party Ladies and are very simple to make. They can be made ahead of time and stored in a tin for several weeks. (if the cookie monsters in YOUR house don't sniff out your hiding place!)

Biscotti are a traditional Italian cookie that are baked twice & keep for a long time!

2 Cups flour
2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
1 stick unsalted butter(softened)
1 cup sugar
1/4 cup annisette
1 tsp vanilla
1/2 cup Pine Nuts
1 Tbsp anise seeds

Preheat oven to 350 degrees
Combine ingredients & form a log aprox 12 inches long & 2 inches wide.
Bake on parchment paper covered cookie sheet for 30 minutes.
Allow to cool slightly
With a serrated knife: slice 3/4 in thick & bake an additional 30 minutes ( turning after 15 minutes)
Of course you will feel compelled to eat any that don't come out just right! Make sure you have the coffee ready! Happy Baking!!

The Soap Barn's New Home

What a labor of love to reclaim this space and create a
new home for my soap shop. Underneath that lovely pine floor is century old cement . Mr Bill framed & leveled it, installed rigid insulation and installed this great floor with cut nails like the rest of the barn.
Built in 1850, the barn was the Carriage House for this property . Pegged beams and original wood make this a warm & cozy spot.

The glass store front fills the wide open space that wagons, carriages, & horses once used. The huge sliding barn doors still hang outside. While still functional, they're just decorative now. ( A small front porch levels the rise out front)

We've installed thermopane storms on the inside of all the
old windows to keep us a bit warmer. Mr Bill cut all the interior frame pieces so I could conjure up a stain that matched old weathered barn wood.
A Harmon pellet stove was installed for heat, and a ton of pellets stacked along side of the winters hay. We insulated where we could, and I'll be hanging some of my quilt collection on the chillier walls. Once again these heirloom textiles will be keeping out the winters chill .

Its taken several years, countless hours, and more dollars than we expected, but re purposing this wonderful old building was truly a labor of love.

Walker Valley Haunted House

The Walker Valley Fire Department is presenting their 2nd annual Haunted House at the Walker Valley Fire House on Oct 30th & 31st from 7- 10 pm on both nights. Suitable for most children; but parents can use their discretion...This is a Free event for the community, and surrounding areas although any donations will be appreciated. There will be a Ten room haunted house in the pavilion behind the firehouse. Hot dogs & drinks will be available. On Saturday, a Costume Parade has been organized by the Town of Shawangunk . Line up for the Walker Valley Parade starts at 3:30pm at the Cobblestone Quick Mart and will be led by our own Walker Valley Marching Band. Children are encouraged to dress up, and the parade ends at the Walker Valley Fire House (a short walk). Refreshments & costume judging to follow.

This event is organized by our volunteer firemen with help from community volunteers & is a Free Event. One of the many events that make us love living in a small town!

Treasures from the Sea

The natural sea sponges for "Treasures from the Sea" soap are harvested from the Gulf of Mexico near Tarpon Springs Florida.

Our sponges are sustainably harvested by sponge divers who cut only a section of the plant , leaving a large section of sponge to regrow. Careful rotation cutting keeps any area from being over harvested. This results in larger , healthier sponges without destroying a vital part of the ocean environment.

Sea sponges are safer & last longer than synthetic sponges. Synthetic sponges & bath poufs can quickly become a haven for mold, mildew, & bacteria. Sea sponges contain a naturally occurring enzymes that inhibit bacterial growth. Which would you rather wash with?

Our Sea Sponges Soaps are embedded through the whole bar of soap & eliminate the need for a washcloth . Once the soap is gone, rinse the sponge with white vinegar & continue to enjoy. Safe for all skin types, Treasures from the Sea are available in several fragrances and soap types.

Once upon a time there was a beautiful dining room in a lovely old home. Friends and family gathered for holiday meals & special occasions. While it wasn't used all the time, it was a lovely place to entertain...and then came SOAP.

It started with a few bars curing on the dining room table because it was an out of the way place and not used all that often. Before you could say "saponify" the 8 foot table became "the curing spot"

Next came: The Invasion of the Fragrance & Essential Oils! As we search for the perfect blend, the perfect scent
those innocent brown bottles multiply while we sleep! Those who soap know...the rest of the story. Oils, butters, lye, dried botanicals, loofahs , shrink wrap, raffia, impulse sealers: the list goes on and on. And before you know it: The Invasion is complete! The lovely dining room has been transformed into: THE SOAP ROOM

In an attempt to once again enjoy gathering with family & friends I am attempting to regain the use of my dining room. As we speak, the upstairs of the barn is being tranformed into the studio & soap kitchen. The large downstairs room is being fitted with a pellet stove & thermopane windows. A beautiful pine floor has been laid and is just waiting to be stained.
With help ( and prayers) the soapy takeover will be soon be over. My family will never again hear those dreaded words;" You CAN"T eat, I'm soaping" Stay tuned for the next segment of: "As far as the eye can see...soap"

Fruits of the Season

Here's one of my favorite recipes . Pumpkins & Apples are harvest ritual at our house. Here's a simple recipe that uses both .

Pumpkin Apple Bread
(Preheat oven to 350)

3 cups flour
3/4 tsp salt
2 tsp baking soda
1 tsp nutmeg
1 tsp ground cloves
1/3 tsp allspice
14.5 oz can pumpkin
3/4 cup vegetable oil
2 1/4 cups sugar
4 large eggs
2 apples peeled & chopped (2 cups)

Combine & mix well. Fold in apples last and divide between 2 greased loaf pans. Bake for aprox 50 minutes on lowest oven rack.

This is the basic recipe . The outline if you will. I have substituted whole grain flour , fresh squash or pumpkin for canned, reduced sugar, used honey or molasses, added nuts, seeds, raisins or dried cranberries . As long as I stayed with in the basic proportions, it always turned out great.

I'd love it if you guys would share your variations with me. Bet you've come up with things I never thought of. There's no such thing as too many cooks! Just lots of new ideas!

Healthy Harvest 5K Run/Walk

The Ladies Auxillary of The Walker Velley Fire Department is sponsoring a 5K Walk/Run on Saturday Oct 10th . Sponsored by the Ladies & a number of our local business owners, this 3.1 mile course is family friendly and prizes are offered for 1st, 2nd, & 3d place finishes in each category. Today the UPS man showed up late this afternoon with four cases of African Market Baskets.
These are a Fair Trade Purchase and are wonderfully colorful & sturdy. They are shipped flat and have to be rehydrated before they can be put out for sale. So, into the basket bath tub they go!
These beauties are great for "green shopping", gardening, magazines, any place where you would use a tote bag. At the Farmers Market, we've offered the shallow ovals to fill with jams, honey, organic pancake mix & pure maple syrup, wine, bread, cheese, & produce as a one of a kind gift.
We'll be offering "The Taste of the Hudson Valley" gift basket in our shop in time for Thanksgiving gifting. What hostess would'nt love a basket full of Natures Bounty from our local producers & growers?

Safe Journey

Early each spring, the hummingbirds hover outside my kitchen window
reminding me that I havent put the feeder up for them. Its hard to believe that after migrating to Mexico, South America, and Cuba for the winter, the
same birds make their way back to where they hatched & know where the food belongs!

Last week saw a flurry of feeding activity at the feeder. My guests were getting ready for their long trip south. Hormonal changes & the changing of the seasons signals the start of the migration more predictably than any calender. Like the changing leaves & chilly nights , the departure of the hummingbirds tells us that winter is on its way.

An opportunity to see artistic and creative talent from the area. Artists, craftsmen and unique items will be showcased. A variety of musical entertainment throughout the day. Harvest Festival Saturday

The Pine Bush Harvest Festival takes place in the heart of the hamlet of Pine Bush on the 3d Saturday in September. This year, it will be held on Sept 19th from 9am-3pm (raindate Sept 20th).
Sponsored by The Pine Bush Lions Club, the Harvest Festival is a celebration of our community. Main Street will be closed for the duration of the festival. Vendors, Art & crafts people, food, live entertainment, games, clubs & service organizations will be on hand for this fun filled day.

The Pine Bush Farmers Market will also be held in the municipal lot behind the Crawford Cultural Center.

Look for 1846 House Soaps at the market between Burds Farm & Late Bloomer Farm.

Time to Wash the Critters

The temperature was predicted to hit 80 degrees today ( and who knows when it will again) so I decided my horse and my dog both needed a bath. Popped a bar of my Essential Oil Dirty Dawg Soap out of the mold and filled the kiddie pool. After bathing Buddy the One Eyed Yellow Lab I decided that Dirty Dawg would work just fine on a dirty horse. Well my old friend Max looks and smells just great! Raspberries Bustin' Out All Over!

The less than good weather this summer hasn't bothered the fall raspberries one little bit! The bushes are all full of plump, delicious berries begging to be picked and made into something wonderful.

A few years ago, my bosom buddy Judy was down from Vermont during raspberry time & shared a Vermont specialty: Raspberry Pie. Never thought of making a pie out of raspberries, but one bite and I was hooked! ( And its EASY!)

So, for the uninitiated, here's Judy's Mom's recipe for Vermont Raspberry Pie.

6 cups of Raspberries
1 cup sugar
3 Tbsp cornstarch or flour
or
1/4 cup tapioca
Mix together gently and place in your favorite pie crust

Bake @ 400 degrees for 45 minutes or until bubbly.

That's it! A scoop of vanilla ice cream only adds to it, but this wonderful berry pie is a treat for the taste buds no matter how you eat it!

Walking on Air

Please join Shawangunk Community Members and artist Stefanie Loeb to participate in a Flag-Making Workshop to represent the Town of Shawangunk in the Walking on Air Procession. The workshops are free and open to the public.

October 3^rd 2009, marks the opening of the Walkway Over the Hudson, completing the transformation of the historic Poughkeepsie-Highland Railroad Bridge into a mile-long pedestrian path soaring 212 feet above the Hudson River. The Walking on Air Procession will mark the first public steps across the Walkway, as the bridge becomes a stage for a site-specific performance artwork created and performed by several thousand volunteers. Artists in every city, village and town in both Dutchess and Ulster Counties will be working in their communities to create flags that will be carried in the procession over the Walkway

Only in the MidHudson Valley could an abandoned railroad bridge be transformed into a scenic destination. This vision has been many years in planning & funding, and is the result of countless volunteers who believed that this idea could come a reality.

I packed up with my 'soap-sister' Nina of Happy Herbs Soap early Sunday morning to head off to Mowers Market in Woodstock NY. Every Saturday & Sunday for the last 30+ years, the quiet meadow becomes a flea market & craft extravaganza. No visit to Woodstock is complete without a stop at the meadow .

" Mower's Saturday Market is situated on two beautiful acres, in a grass-covered field, down Maple Lane, behind Bread Alone, across the street from Maria's Bazar, and one short block from the famous Village Green. . It is, as you will discover, a treat both for the eye and the pocketbook.

A vital part of Woodstock's tradition, Mower's Saturday Market is a piece of Woodstock's history, a wonderful part of its present and will, no doubt, have a place in its future.

We do not exaggerate when we tell you that you can find everything from antiques to zebras, from zithers to artwork. "

Once we were set up & settled, I set off for a quick look around the market. African drumming, antiques, air plants, meditation gongs, stone work, veggies, jams, yard sale treasures, strolling musicians: so much to take in! I felt like a kid in a candy store!

This is the third soap tribute to the fabulous music played at the Original Woodstock Festival, held 40 years ago this weekend!

I"m sure The Strawberry Alarm Clock wasn't singing about soap , but this sings:

Early mornings in the garden, while everyone is still asleep is the best time to get my mind in order for the day. The plan may change many times, but the time to plan & think is something I treasure. When the New York winter makes it seem like spring will never arrive, I think of these early morning garden walks as I eagerly await the first signs of spring. My daughter Kyra gave me a stepping stone inscribed with " An hour in the garden put lifes problems in perspective..." I think she knows me well...

Pine Bush Sweet Corn Celebration

What says Summer better than fresh picked roasted ears of sweet corn? Saturday is the Sweet Corn Celebration at The Pine Bush Farmers Market. All market shoppers can sample fresh corn, roasted to perfection . Roasting gives corn a nutty flavor that can't be beat! Take home a dozen and try it yourself!

We'll be there with our cold process goat milk soap, handmade African Market Baskets ( NEW SHIPMENT & great selection), handmade beeswax candles, and our " Goat in a Sweater" handfelted soaps!

We just got a new shipment of African Market Baskets. We never know what we'll get exactly, so its a bit like Christmas when we open them up

They are shipped to us flat and need to be re hydrated and reshaped before we can put them in the shop. They are shipped to us inside one another, so getting them apart is the first adventure.

Miss Johnson is a great help with the baskets. First she removes the customs tags from each. Then she fills up the 'basket bathtub' . Each basket is then dipped in tepid water for about 15 seconds to give the grass a chance to soften. She's very careful not to wet the leather and carefully counts out the time for each & every basket. Then mom reshapes each and sets them out to dry. They will be re tagged before they are brought to the Farmers Market and placed in the shop.

Our baskets are a Fair Trade Federation purchase from the Bolgatanga Region of Ghana, West Africa. Basket weaving is mostly done by the women of this region to supplement their income from farming activities. The mission was to assist poor rural women in earning a fair income from the fruit of their labor in order to care for their children. If the women can create an income, it provides for the children as well as promoting self-esteem for the weaver, the children, and the village.

How are these baskets made?

Elephant grass straw is collected from the tops of the stalk, and each piece is split in half vertically by biting through it.

Each half of the split straw is twisted tightly by rolling against the weavers leg to give it strength.

The straw is put in bunches and dyed. For bright colors, the straw is first dyed yellow, then the color.

The weaver selects appropriate straw for the base, sides, and handle. The selection of the proper straw for the various parts is critical to good weaving.

Weaving starts at the base and works up to the rim. Rims are generally wrapped with straw to form a tube like edge.

The handles are wrapped around a grass core and leather handles applied by local leather workers.

Remaining bits of straw are carefully trimmed off. The trimming determines how the basket feels to the touch.

A medium basket takes three days to weave.

Each basket is made entirely by hand, and varies slightly in size & pattern. The individuality of each weaver shows clearly in these baskets. No two are identical and each is one of a kind. Such is the beauty of handmade!

Pure Romney Wool is hand dyed, wrapped around a bar of our goat milk & shea butter soap,
then hand felted to create " GOAT IN A SWEATER" . As you wash, the wool continues to felt, acts as a mildly exfoliating washcloth, shrinking as the soap does.

No slivers of soap to chase around in the shower. You can use every bit of your handmade soap. The wool wicks water away from the soap is help it last a long time. As with all handmade soap, keep in a soap dish that allows it to dry between uses.

When the soap is gone, you have a one of a kind felt bag to open & keep a tresure in, or a felted cleaning pad for your face.

Our cold process goat milk and shea butter soap is handmade in small batches, cut, and allowed to cure for at least four weeks before wrapping. Food grade oils, creamy goat milk, and African shea butter combine with fragrance and essential oils to create a natural soap that cleanses gently, smoothes, and softens.

Walker Valley Used Book Sale & Flea Market

What started out with Kelli Palinkas Greer volunteering at The Thrall Library Used Book Store in Middletown New York, has turned into a wonderful fundraiser for the Walker Valley Fire Department.

Several years ago, the Cragsmoor Library contacted Kelli with many cases of used books they no longer needed. Soon, Ellenville joined in & Kelli's whole studio was filled with books waiting for a new home. She brought boxes weekly to Thrall, but the books kept on coming. Together with Greg Greer ( past fire chief & now Kelli's husband) the idea was discussed with the Walker Valley Fire Deptartment who agreed to provide the space, tables, and help.

Over 1000 titles found new homes last year, and the funds raised were donated to the FD to help purchase new turnout gear & protective clothing.

For those who love to read, bargains galore await you! Hardcover books are $1. Paperbacks are 50 cents. Romance Novels are 25 cents & kids books are 10cents. When was the last time you stocked up on a whole summers worth of reading material for yourself & your family for a price like that? My daughter & I left last year with a shopping bag full of books for each of us for a few dollars.

The event was so successful, that this year it has expanded. The bigger & better event is scheduled for: July 31, Aug1,2,&3
This years event includes the used book sale, but also a flea market & garage sale, vendors, craftspeople, farmers with fresh produce, & prepared food to take home or eat as you shop.

The Funny Farm

In my previous post, I talked about Bark in the Park & the organizations that will benefit from this event. The Walden Humane Society & Second Chance Farms will be the recipients of the proceeds from this day. I'm grateful to both of these organizations for all that they do, but especially for these special pets: *

*Buddy, the one eyed yellow lab was adopted from the Walden Humane Society. A breeder brought him in to be destroyed. Born with micro-opthalmia , he was "unacceptable" due to his "less than perfect" appearance. He's a wonderful companion to " Miss Johnson" & a great family dog

*Several year ago, Alice, from Second Chance Farms asked me to foster a pregnant stray and provide her with a quiet & safe place to have her kittens. After, she would take the mother & kittens and find them homes. " Mamma Kitty" wanted only to be fed & left alone. After giving birth to 5 kittens, Mama & two of the kids remained with us. Slowly she became more trusting & decided that we could be her people. Mamma died recently from cardiac problems, but we know her life with us was a good one.

Here are some of the rest of the crew. Hard luck stories all, but they are a welcome part of the Funny Farm Family!

Max, a Standardbred race horse was off the track due to injuries while still a young man. He was reschooled as an English pleasure horse & came with his own companion. If we took Max, we had to take his side kick Rhoda( an older quarter horse who had been passed around many times in her life) So, Max & Rhoda ( don"t they sound like a retired couple from a Catskill Hotel?)
joined the funny farm. Rhoda was a steady old gal & I used her to teach my kids to ride. She was part of our family until she passed. Max is still with us @ 27yrs old. Handsome, but the old injuries are bothering so he's "retired" & dosent seem to mind being "a lawn ornament".

Our small goat herd were about to be slaughtered for meat when they got loaded into the van & joined the family. They don't seem to mind their lives as goat-dogs & like everything here, will die of old age.

A few winters ago, 4 domestic geese wandered down the path by the barn & demanded a meal.
I did not want anymore geese, but they had other ideas. After looking for their owners, it seemed that they had been "dumped " on the road by someone who decided that keeping geese was not their cup of tea. One pan of cracked corn ( they were hungry!) & guess who became the somewhat unwilling owner of 4 grey geese? They made themselves right at home, bossing all the other animals & acting as our own alarm system for the whole property.

As I re-read this post, it occurs to me, that most of our animals came to us when we were not looking to add more animals to our lives. Who chooses? I think they choose for us.

We have another great community event taking place on June 20th. Terri, from Pampered Pets Grooming ( who also does amazing wildlife wood carvings) has organized a fundraiser for The Walden Humane Society and Second Chance Farm that is a MUST ATTEND for pet lovers and people who support animal rescue

Our Humane Society does a wonderful job of trying to help the huge numbers of animals that come thru their doors. Volunteers donate countless hours , but there is always a need for animal food, kitty litter, & cash contributions.

Second Chance Farm is a local rescue organization run that cares for abused, neglected, and homeless pets. Run by Alice, our local Vet Tech at Walker Valley Animal Hospital, they are always in need of donations, supplies, vet services and of course loving & forever homes for their animals.

For those of you who are local, a Rabies Clinic will be offered .
Please make sure your cats are in carriers & dog on a leash.

We'll be making up a gift basket of Natural Dog Products by
Sunfeather, as well as our own "Dirty Dawg" Pet Shampoo

The Walker Valley Fire Dept hosts Old Fashioned Day every June here in Walker Valley. This event was started some 20 years ago by Judge Greg Greer & his wife Dorothy. It was an opportunity for friend & neighbors to gather and see the way things were done in the Old Days. Music, Food, demonstartions of Old Time Crafts & great childrens games. The fire dept sells "fair food" at Old Fashioned prices. While a soap making demo is a little too dangerous for a crowd, I'll be demonstarting bees wax candle making and selling my old fashioned soap.

Finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. My shop will be moving downstairs to bigger & more airy quarters sometime in the next few weeks. ( If you look at my barn, the shop always wanted to be downstairs) Once the move is complete, upstairs becomes my studio complete with soap kitchen. ( Soap lady doing the happy dance here!!) It will be so nice to have a work space that dosent serve any other purpose. To have all my supplies in one place & the room to spread out and create without distractions is something I've dreamed of since I made my first bar of soap!!

Had to share this beauty with you. The inspiration for this soap came to me on Ocracoke when I purchased some Abalone shells for a great price. Was sitting looking over Pamlico Sound early one morning when the idea for this soap popped into my head. Love my natural, cold process goat milk soap...but its all BROWN. A beautiful day in the country...

A dear old friend, gone these last 10 years would always greet his neighbors with: " It's a beautiful day in the country>" No matter what the weather or the season, to the "Judge" , a day in our valley was always worth commenting upon. I think it was his was of gently reminding us to slow down enough to appreciate the beauty that surrounds us here in Walker Valley.
This morning, as usual, I had a list of things that needed to be accomplished before today was yesterday. My intentions were good, I felt motivated and goal oriented. I was looking forward to completing each task and the satisfaction that goes with checking it off the list. And then I went outside.
In early spring, when the weather is fine, I start each day wandering my gardens: coffee cup in hand, to check on the progress of all growing things. I wander the gardens in my nightgown, listening to the birds greet the rising sun, with no one to see me but the animals. It's a peaceful way to start my day& something I dream about during the long frozen winter mornings.
Today was not the day for my to do list. I wandered , puttered, planted, potted & pruned.
I sat on a bench and planned the bentwood arbor I would build to shade it. I pictured it covered with vibrant orange trumpet vine & humming birds keeping me company while I rested in it's shade.
I repotted a water lily with root ball so huge it's pot was bursting. I looked at the tiny gold fish in my little water garden and thought of them so large I would have to find homes for many.
I rearranged the decorative trash & treasures that make up my garden accents & create whimsy when you least expect it. Moving things about, elevating statuary, moving chimes where they catch the breeze in a different way, changing the waterfall in my little pond so that the sound will carry to bedroom window as I lay in bed. It dawned on me that I wasnt wasting time. I decorated my outside world in a way that soothes my spirit & took a day to just "be".

Back from a relaxing ten days on Ocracoke Island. This trip was everything a vacation should be. After taking a few days to wind down, getting 8 hours of sleep a night, and taking a slice of time to reconnect with my "just me" self, the ability to think clearly and creatively returned to my somewhat fried brain! Come on vacation with me for a few paragraphs...
Sixteen miles of unspoiled beaches stretch along 16 miles of Ocracoke Island. As part of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, opportunities for swimming, surf fishing, boating, clamming, or just beach combing are the order of the day. Shelling, biking, bird watching, and kayaking are also wonderful.
The village at the southern tip of the island is accessible only by private plane, private boat or one of the state run ferries. Limited access have helped preserve the prominent Old English inspired brogue of the local residents and the old time island way of life.
Until the 1950's, residents lived in relative isolation. Their contact with the mainland was from daily trips by the mail boat. Islanders made their living from fishing, hunting, and as guides. Ocracoke had long been the destination of wealthy hunters & fishermen & mainland families who could afford to summer in the cool breezes that the island offered. It was not until Highway 12 was paved and scheduled ferry service was offered in 1957 that Ocracoke Island was truly discovered.
For a brief period during World War Two, the Coast Guard Station was transformed into a US Navy Base. Beaches were closed, fishing was curtailed, homes and businesses were requisitioned, and the islands life style was interrupted. The war was witnessed firsthand offshore where " Torpedo Junction" claimed more then 60 ships during the first 6 months of 1942. The British Cemetery serves as a reminder of the generosity of Ocracoke people. It holds the bodies of four young British soldiers who lost their lives when the HMC Bedforshire was torpedoed by a German submarine off the Ocracoke coast. Island residents found and buried the bodies on donated land and continue to maintain the graves.
Ocracoke's history is rich in sea lore. Blackbeard, the infamous pirate who plundered the Carolina coast in the early 1700's, fought his last battle just off the island at Teach's Hole, where he lost his head. Legend hints that his vast treasure may still be buried on the island. Ocracoke Inlet served as the main waterway at one time forming port towns on Ocracoke & Portmouth Islands and spurring the growth of these coastal villages. Portsmouth Village, now a ghost town is maintained by the Cape Lookout Park Service and can be toured. The oldest working lighthouse in North Carolina and one of the oldest on the East Coast has stood tall on Ocracoke since 1823, guiding ships alone the treacherous Graveyard of the Atlantic.
The small community of 800 year round residents work together to preserve the islands culture and history. The Ocracoke Preservation Museum does a wonderful job of preserving the history of island life.
The motto of the real estate company we rent our cottage from is: Relax, You're South of the Stress Line!" For me, its the truth.

Ocracoke Bound

We are off for our long awaited and yearned for trip to Ocracoke Island, North Carolina. The outer most barrier island, Ocracoke is only accessible by boat or air. The National Park service manages most of the island with on small village at the far end. Only about 600 people call Ocracoke home. There are no big box stores, fast food, or even a movie theater! All shops & hotels are owned by the locals and most people walk or bike around the village. The beach, fishing, crabbing, and just relaxing are the order of the day. When you leave the ferry, you are truly "below the stress line" I'm off !!

Spring Has Sprung

After a long, seeming endless winter, Spring has sprung here in the Valley. The robins are back, peeper frogs sing us to sleep, and the snowdrops, squill, and daffodils give us a preview of colors to come!
April 18th is the Pine Bush Little League Parade. All the kids are out in their bright new uniforms to parade down Main Street & to the Town Park to the music of our own Walker Valley Marching Band & HS Marching Band. Small town fun at its best!
But something else will be happening downtown that day. Pine Bush has a long history of UFO sightings & is known as The UFO Capitol of the Northeast. Aliens have been spotted popping up in shop windows all over town!! What is this strange phenonmenon?? Its UFO Hide & Seek!! A FUN & FREE Event for the whole family. Spot "Alfie the Alien" in his flying saucer in each shop with aliens in the window and collect a star token. No Down Time Here!

Been a busy month here at The Old Red Barn. Once we decided to move the shop down to the lower level ( the upstairs was always intended to be studio space) we started going hells-poppin'! The old cement floor was framed out and rigid insulation laid. We now have a beautiful wide pine plank floor waiting for the warmer weather to be sealed. A brick platform was laid in anticipation of a pellet stove, additional outlets & lighting were wired in. This gives us more usable space and I get my studio back. It also eliminates the trip up the stairs which was difficult for some of our customers.

We've also teamed up with a wonderful, talented group of local Hudson Valley artisans who are interested in being part of our shop. More on this as we develop our shop & handcrafted gallery.

In our area, the community works long & hard to provide an All Night Graduation Party for our seniors. The local chamber of commerce as well as many civic organizations raise funds to provide this safe and memorable night for our young people. Gift certificates, merchandise , and fundraisers abound. Everyone contributes & everyone gets involved. This is what makes living in a small town so rewarding!

1846 House Soaps has also gotten involved in Relay for Life. Here in Pine Bush, we "Paint the Town Purple" during the festivities. We are doing Awareness Ribbon goat milk & shea butter soaps (with a purple ribbon, of course) for two of the relay teams as a fundraiser. Boy, have I got Eggs!

The cute little puff ball chicks from last July have morphed into mature chicken ladies and commenced laying just before Christmas. Red Comets lay beautiful, large brown eggs and are personable as well. These gals have been raised on non medicated organic feed & produce and are the healthiest & happiest chickens around! But lets do the math. 26 hens x 5 eggs per week is a staggering number of eggs. If this were Farmers Market Season, I'd be selling eggs as fast as the girls could produce them! While the shop is open, this is the slow time of year. Had a brilliant idea this am for marketing these eggs to the folks who purchase organic at the supermarket. Wish me luck on this one. If you are local, the shop is open Wednesday thru Sunday, 11am-6pm and in addition to our Goat Milk Soaps & Lotions, Soaps by Happy Herbs Soap, beautiful & Funky scarves by Out of Hand, ....we have eggs for sale!

To my local customers , thanks for a wonderful and successful year. I love meeting and visiting with all of you and appreciate your dedication to shopping locally and supporting local artisans. Without you, 1846 House Soaps would not have passed the idea stage. For those of you who found me on the Internet, I hope to create the same feeling for you.
